Pursuing and potentially receiving an Autism diagnosis can be intimidating for families. What if it’s yes? No? Unsure at this age? Will my child be treated differently? Will they need additional support? Did I do something wrong? There are three key things to remember if your child receives an Autism diagnosis.
1) You didn’t do anything wrong.
1 in 31 children are likely to be diagnosed with Autism according to the CDC. The diagnosis prevalence is increasing due to many positive factors, like increased access to diagnostic support and a better understanding of ASD and what it looks like.
2) Your child doesn’t need to be fixed.
Autism isn’t a disease that needs cured. Therapy can help many children navigate life more confidently and comfortably. It doesn’t change who they are or try to hide a portion of their identity.
3) The future is still just as bright.
Many individuals with Autism do not need therapy, but for those who do early care has shown to make a tremendous difference in their life before they adopt unhealthy coping skills. As we continue to uplift the Autism identity, we hope to see a future that is more accepting of all differences and more and more spaces for individuals with all levels of needs to enjoy and move through life with ease.
