Learn about ABA Therapy

We offer our services throughout the Northeastern United States. We’re committed to giving families the support they need to navigate an often overwhelming landscape.

Tell me all about Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding behavior. ABA refers to a set of scientific principles that focus on how behaviors change, or are affected by the environment, as well as how learning takes place. The term behavior refers to everything we do, our actions, and what we say. In ABA, we focus on teaching behaviors that are socially significant for clients and would have the greatest impact on improving their lives on a daily basis. Most goals worked on during ABA sessions include increasing communication, social skills, play skills, independent skills, and daily living skills. When someone is struggling with behaviors that are dangerous, harmful, or interfere with their learning, we would teach them safer and healthier ways to communicate their wants and needs.

Skills assessments measure specific skills across a variety of age appropriate responses. Most assessments focus on verbal communication, play skills, other social skills, and independent living skills. The skills are measured and are used to establish baselines, what the individual can demonstrate without being taught, and which skills should be targeted for acquisition. The results of the assessment are used to establish goals the individual will work on during their ABA sessions.

All 50 US states mandate insurance coverage for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis and treatment, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, though the specific coverage details and restrictions vary by state.

Behavior Assessments

Behavior assessment, often referred to as a functional behavior assessments (FBA), is a process of identifying behaviors that interfere with learning and socialization and developing interventions to improve or eliminate those behaviors. An FBA consists of information-gathering procedures about the target behavior that result in a hypothesis about the function(s) that the behavior is serving for the individual. Behavior plans are then developed and followed by the treatment team throughout ABA sessions.
