Learn the truth about Autism
If you suspect your child might have Autism or they’ve already received a diagnosis, it can be challenging to navigate the discourse online by yourself. Let Autism Care Partners help guide you through the truth and the misconceptions.
Why Truth Matters
At Autism Care Partners, clinical excellence is one of our core values. This means we are guided by science and evidence. There is information circulating in the news right now about Autism that is not supported by science.
What we know from the research is vaccines do not cause Autism. Tylenol use during pregnancy does not cause Autism. There is no drug that will cure Autism, and Autism is not a disease that needs to be cured. Autistic people need support, acceptance, and inclusion.
There is no known single cause of Autism. It’s a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that has a strong genetic component. We are saddened by any message that contributes to unnecessary guilt felt by parents and any message that serves as distractions from evidence-based care.
We at Autism Care Partners are aligned with the World Health Organization, American Psychiatric Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, Autism Speaks, and the Autism Science Foundation. We reject claims that are not based on science because they are harmful to Autistic individuals and their families.
What is Autism?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts an estimated 1 in 31 children. The instances of an Autism diagnosis have increased over the years due to more general recognition, greater medical expertise, changes to diagnostic criteria, and new criteria allowing individuals to receive multiple diagnoses.
There aren’t more Autistic individuals now than before; there are more people receiving a diagnosis and answers to questions they’ve always had.
Diagnosing Autism
Autism can challenge an individual’s ability to effectively communicate, participate socially, build relationships, and/or perform academically or occupationally.
Early diagnosis can help a child receive the therapy they might need in a timely manner. Many children who receive an early diagnosis and early therapy more easily transition to school settings and see higher comfortability and confidence performing daily tasks.
Symptoms of Autism can look similar but be different for each individual, and children with Autism can be developing and meeting their milestones but then experience regression. This is why it’s vital to connect with a trained expert to ensure a proper diagnosis is received.
Common Symptoms of Autism
Diagnosticians use the DSM-5 to evaluate and diagnose Autism, if appropriate. There are four key symptoms of Autism that might indicate to you that your child might benefit from an Autism evaluation.
All 50 US states mandate insurance coverage for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis and treatment, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, though the specific coverage details and restrictions vary by state.
