Explore nonpreferred activities with ACP’s incredible Clinical Director, Tara Faford, M.S., BCBA, LABA, from Team Concord!

Nonpreferred activities are things we need to do, even if we don’t feel like it, such as brushing our teeth, washing our hands, or working on a skill we just find boring or less interesting as others.

One way to help our kiddos progress in activities that are nonpreferred is by pairing them with highly preferred items.

Some examples we use here on Team Concord are pairing the tablet with vehicles or other chosen toys and letting the child play with them prior to presenting work. Another example is using a bubble gun to help with transitions between different rooms in the building. Toileting is often paired with tablet time or in some cases a small edible.

Concerned about your child’s new nonpreferred activities or just have more questions about this process? Collaborate with your team to explore options for addressing these activities at home and at the center!
